The Improving Safety and Quality Award

WCHN Awards 2023 Header

This award recognises outstanding achievement in research or education towards improvements in patient safety and quality of care.

It supports the priorities of the WCHN’s Safety and Quality programs and the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards.

WINNER:

FAAIRI (Fast Advice and Access for Intravenous Routes with Imaging) Service

This nurse-led service, the first for children in Australia, provides best-evidence supported practice around VAD (Vascular Access Device) choice and insertion planning by using ultrasound. This service allows women, babies, children and young people to receive the right VAD the first time, in a timely manner and with only one attempt.

Central Venous Access Device – Consumer Education

CVADs are a requirement for many Cassia Ward inpatients and require management when they are on day leave from hospital. Registered nurses Alana and Madeline have worked to improve the safety and quality of this process through evaluation and education for both consumers and staff to minimise potential complications. The result has seen families be able to successfully and safely manage their child’s CVAD.

Women’s Physiotherapy – Management of Persistent Pelvic Pain

This team is improving outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for women suffering from persistent pelvic pain. By translating evidence into practice, they have tested, developed and implemented the most timely, efficient and effective pathway to improve patient quality of care. The outcome of their approach supports women to better manage their pain, restore their participation in school, work and sport, while also helping reduce impacts to the wider health system.
