SA’s virtual paediatric emergency department is a winner!

We won! Our Child and Adolescent Virtual Urgent Care Service (CAVUCS) is the joint winner of the Premier’s Excellence Award for Excellence in Service Delivery!

This virtual emergency department is the first of its kind in Australia offering children and young people (aged between 6 months and 17 years) with non-life-threatening conditions, access to expert advice from qualified emergency doctors and nurses, no matter where they are.

The team works collaboratively with SA Ambulance Service, Priority Care Centres, COVIDKids and specialist services to ensure children and adolescents get timely access to the right care.

Project Lead, Kerry McKeough, said they have had overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who’ve used the service so far.

“It has been so rewarding being able to develop and deliver this service that we know has made a difference to thousands of South Australians in just a few months,” Ms Keough said.

“Patients tell us that they really enjoy the convenience of the virtual platform and being able to have expert advice available at the click of a button gives them great peace of mind.”

Since commencing the service late last year, more than 2000 patients have been assessed, with almost 90% of those avoiding a visit to the emergency department.

The outcomes for consumers speak for themselves, with 97% stating their condition improved or stabilised after the virtual consult, and 100% of respondents saying they are either very likely or likely to use the service again.

This is well deserved recognition for the hard work and innovation shown by the team at the Women’s and Children’s Health Network.
