Staff Spotlight: Kim’s 40 years of service
Kim started her career at the Adelaide Children’s Hospital in 1982 in the Payroll Department where she was a clerical officer and typist for the Paymaster and Expenditure Officer.
“I had a manual typewriter, so my spelling had to be very good!" she says, reflecting on her early responsibilities that included microfilming time sheets and cheques, and clocking in porters – now known as orderlies.
Kim’s career progressed over the years, as did the hospital – amalgamating with Queen Victoria Hospital to in May 1995 to form today’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
Kim is now the ward clerk in the Haematology and Oncology Ward, now the Michael Rice Centre – a position that provides meaningful interactions with patients and staff.
“To see the patients go through their treatment, some of whom are very sick and then to become well, it makes me feel very proud to have worked there with so many exceptional staff over the years.”
When asked about the advice she had for others on finding a fulfilling career, she said:
“My secret to a successful 40-year career is to always be pleasant even if you are having a bad day, as well as having the opportunity to learn different things and to like what you do.”
“The children’s hospital offers great employment opportunities if you wish to advance your career,” she says.
Kim always brings her Christmas spirit to the ward.
Today Kim remains a dedicated staff member of the Women’s and Children’s Health Network (WCHN) and was recently recognised at the WCHN Length of Service Awards, which acknowledges the achievements and milestones of our longest serving staff.
Thank you, Kim, for all your hard work and dedication over the decades!
